Thirsty Thursday - Let's Get Naked!

I find myself traveling quite a bit between visiting family and friends, then finding balance by getting settled in back at home to refocus and get back into routine.  As you can probably tell by now, keeping on top of my nutrition is a big thing for me and it has been a bit of a struggle when I don't have the comforts of my own kitchen (where I spend much of my time at home).  All that I think about for the first week I'm away from my humble abode is, "DAMN I miss my juicer!"  In my recent experiences with being away from home (and my juicer) for extended periods of time, I have grown to love trying all the variety of flavor Naked Juice offers.  Here are some of my favorites for when you too are on the road.

Workout Wednesday - Upright Bicycles

3/26/2014

1. Start by sitting upright.  Then, lift your legs up and bend at the knees so that your calves are parallel with the ground.  Take a slight 45 degree bend back at the hips and place your hands behind your head for support.

NOTE: This position, boat pose in yoga, is the basis of many lower core exercises, so form is key!
2. From your boat pose, twist from the center of your core to one side.  Extend one leg out, and crunch the other in towards your chest.  Aim to touch the opposite elbow to the bent leg.

3. Switch to the other side.
For best results, push yourself!  If you have a strong core, do 100 reps/50 reps on each side.  If you are looking to build up your core, begin with doing 50 reps/25 on each side, take a break to work another muscle group like arms, then do another set of 50 reps/25 on each side.  Continue to work up to doing 100 reps straight through.

Friday's Food for Thought - "Overlandia: Fleeing Work for the Open Road to South America"

I, myself, have always dreamed of escaping the confines of a routine life which most others find comforting and stable. I never quite understood why our society places so much value in settling down right after college with a "good job" -which is generally defined by a secure position within a large corporation with health benefits and blah blah blah.  Well, that sounds boring, doesn't it?

The time right after college is the most valuable time we have to get out and experience life! So I think, why not take advantage of it?  Sure, it may be a little scary to leave a way of life that many of us grew up with, or were told we needed to have when we "grow up".  Well, I don't know about you, but it's not time for me to "grow up" quite yet.

Reading this article published on Adventure Journal about a couple who left their stable lives to explore what else is out there gave me all the confidence and inspiration I have ever needed to do the same for myself.  Enjoy this wonderful story!
1990 Toyota
"Our new home is a 1990 Toyota pickup truck adorned with a solar panel, rooftop tent, and electric fridge. The bed of the truck is filled with Rubbermaid containers housing bathroom items, kitchenware, dry food, and extra blankets."

Why would a seemingly intelligent young professional couple sell all of their belongings and move out of their downtown Vancouver, B.C., condo to move into a truck? That answer’s obvious. The tougher one is, how to overcome the inertia and get on the road?

"The Buzz" by Nekter
(with a little twist)

Picture
After visiting a Nekter Juice Bar in Long Beach, CA a month ago, I immediately fell in love with their juice concoctions and wanted to make them at home for myself.  Luckily, Nekter posts their menu online displaying what goes into each of their juices.  So, I decided to try making one of my favorites, "The Buzz", at home and adding one  of my favorite ingredients, beets, to it. I must say, it turned out pretty awesome!

Hope y'all enjoy!

All you need is...

2 handfuls carrots
1/3 sweet potato
1 orange
1 blood orange
A couple squeezes lemon juice
1/2 handful ginger root
1/2 beet (optional, including root and leaves)

Add all into juicer, stir up, and enjoy!

Workout Wednesday -Jump Switch Lunge

3/19/2014

1. Start out in a high lunge, with hands on hips or out to either side for balance and core straight and strong.  Sink deeper into front leg and gather energy in legs.
2. Pop up and jump to switch legs in the air so the opposite legs land in front and back.  Be sure to maintain balance.
This is a great move to work those quads, stretch your hip flexors, and to also to get in a bit of a cardio workout.

Workout Wednesday -Row

1. Grab a pair of dumbbells from 5-10 pounds each.  Bend at the hip, keeping your back straight, and hold dumbbells in front of you.
2. Perform a row by lifting dumbbells, bending at the elbows and creating a 90-degree angle with your arms.
This move is great for working the back of the arms and the upper back.  To really make sure to create definition in that upper back, act as if you are pinching a pole between the back of your shoulders when you perform the row.

The Kitchen Sink

Picture
The Kitchen Sink is a great way to get that mid-morning or afternoon boost and feel detoxed. With a variety of both fruits and vegetables, you will feel the wonderful effects of nearly every vitamin and nutrient you could possibly think of.
I love making this juice after a run or workout session around lunchtime, and pairing it with something light like an open-faced egg or tuna salad sandwich on whole grain bread.

All you need is...

  • 1/5 apple
  • 1/7 mango
  • 1/4 cucumber
  • 2 kale leaves
  • 1/3 beet (root & stem)
  • 2 handfuls carrots (I generally use baby carrots)
  • 2 handfuls white sweet corn
  • 1/4 sweet potato
  • 1 handful black- and raspberries
  • 1 large strawberry
  • 2 handfuls broccoli florets

Add all of this into juicer, stir up, and enjoy!

Workout Wednesday - Turkish Sit-Up

3/5/2014

1. Lie on your back: One leg and arm stretched out, and the opposite leg bent with that arm straight up in the air holding a 5-15 lb weight. Make sure weight is directly above shoulder
2. Push up on the forearm resting on the ground, keeping the head/neck straight and weight/shoulder aligned.
3. Continue to push up on the forearm, keeping proper form.
4. Reach your peak! Push all the way up so you are leaning onto your hip on the stretched out leg, and the bent leg's buttox is slightly lifted off the ground.  You should also feel a twist in the waist

There are plenty of people out there who are all trying to do the same thing: find a balance between leading a healthy lifestyle, staying motivated at work, and maintaining a stable social and family life.  I often have friends coming to me saying, "I feel like I've fallen out of my routine and can't get back on track", seeking advice on what to do to get back on the health and fitness bandwagon.
